Are you a Zoom Zombie?

There’s been a lot of talk around people feeling mentally exhausted whilst working from home.

Life should be easier, without the commuting and many office distractions. However many social commentators including the Harvard Business review have recently started a discussion on video call fatigue otherwise referred to as being a Zoom Zombie.

Here’s a few reasons why you may feel drained:
1. Video calls force us to focus more intently on conversations in order to absorb information.
2. People are more inclined to lose focus during video calls.
3. The only way to show we’re paying attention is looking into the camera, which can be distracting. But in real life how often do you stand within three feet of a colleague and stare at their face?

How do we combat the zombie zoom fatigue?

• Think about reducing onscreen stimuli e.g using plain backdrops for calls.
• Avoid multitasking, close any unused tabs in your web browser and stay present.
• Switch to phone calls and emails.
• Build in breaks for longer calls e.g switch off your camera when needed.
